DC Fans

The right fan selection

Selecting the right fan for an application depends on several factors, but mainly on the application's power loss and its thermal budget or thermal boundary conditions. Choosing the right fan cannot begin soon enough. Unfortunately, this fact is very often not sufficiently taken into account or even not taken into account when designing electronic devices and apparatus. Instead, the focus of development is on the pure functionality of the application, whereby the fan in particular could be an important component that enables, guarantees and reliably maintains this functionality. It is not too often that sufficient cooling is underestimated and ultimately only a compromise is made with regard to the necessary cooling with all its disadvantageous properties. On the other hand, when planning or developing devices, you should seriously consider some fundamental questions about the need to use a fan in order to at least allow for sufficient installation space for a fan and to ensure the best possible inflow and outflow conditions. If these two criteria are taken into account during planning or development, an important and correct step has been taken towards optimal active cooling or ventilation in order to realize the technical and physical maximum of the application and not just a compromise between functionality and sufficient cooling must be taken into account. The following is about some important selection criteria for the right fan depending on the boundary conditions of the application.

- Does the application require a fan?
- What maximum temperature rise (∆T) is allowed?
- How large is the power loss (PVerl.) of the application?
- Are ∆T and PVerl. In a realistic relationship?
What cooling capacity is required?
- How is the power supply to the fan ensured?
- Should the fan be adjustable?
- What installation space is required for the fan?
- How is the fan arranged/placed?
- What is the packing density of the application?
- How big is the flow resistance in the application?
- Where is the operating point?
- Which type of fan (axial / radial) is used?
- Which operating modes of the application are possible?
- What maximum noise level must not be exceeded?
- What environmental conditions are present?
