Bi Color LED

Bi-color LEDs consist of two LED emitters, normally in the colors red and green. 

  1. Pin assignment:

    • A typical bi-color LED module has three pins: GND (ground), red and green.
    • The anode (positive connection) of the red emitter is connected to the red pin, and the anode of the green emitter is connected to the green pin.
    • The cathodes (negative connection) of both emitters are connected together and connected to the GND pin
  2. How it works:

    • When a positive voltage is applied to the red pin, the red emitter lights up.
    • If a positive voltage is applied to the green pin, the green emitter lights up.
    • By applying voltage to both pins (red and green) at the same time, a mixed color can be generated, e.g. yellow or orange.
  3. Control options:

    • The intensity of each color can be controlled with pulse width modulation (PWM). Different color components can be mixed by switching the voltage on and off quickly.
    • Bi-color LEDs are well suited for status displays, such as the charge status of a battery (red = empty, green = full).
